William F. Enright

I have been researching William Frank Enright since finding this news article online, hoping maybe it was my Frank Enright (it's not)

San Francisco Call Sun Jul 28, 1901
I've tried to compile information about him with the help of others online to try to create a story of his life. Here is what I found.

In the News

There were more articles about Footpad Enright and the harsh Judge Hart:

Incarceration

Here is William's mugshot from Walla Walla in Washington state. Apparently he was transferred there from San Quentin. It says that he was born in New York and was 27 years old when admitted. He was paroled in September 1910 (Source: California, Prison and Correctional Records, 1851-1950).

I believe this is the same person on this WWI draft registration. On it, he says that his father's name is Thomas Enright and that he isn't sure of his age. I believe that, since in every census and document a different age is reported! It says his birthdate is 04 Apr 1874 and that in 1918 his occupation was a huckster (definition: someone who sells small items either door-to-door or in a small store).

US Census Records

The following are the census records I think I've found him in:

In the 1910 US Census William Enright, 38 years old, inmate of San Quentin. It says that his parents were born in Ireland and he was born in Pennsylvania.

In the 1920 US Census William Enright

In the 1930 US Census William Enright, 59 years old, who is a salesman and roomer in the household of William Lawrence in San Francisco.

In the 1940 US Census William Enright, 65 years old, living at the Laguna Honda Relief Home in San Francisco. It says his birthplace is Pennsylvania.

Death

You can find an entry for William Frank on Find a Grave buried at Folsom Prison Cemetery. Apparently he committed robbery again and died in prison, though there is no death date.

James Enright

James Enright was an early settler of Santa Clara County, California and one of the main results one finds when searching Enrights in California. In this post I will share the information I have compiled about him as well as the sources.

James was born on November 18th, 1826 in Limerick County, Ireland. His parents were James and Mary (Mann) Enright. They emigrated to Canada in 1830 and later relocated to Atchison County, Missouri in 1840.

James traveled with his siblings Thomas and Mary to California and arrived at old Mission of San Jose in Sacramento Valley in 1846.

In 1847 he purchased land in Santa Clara, known as the Enright Tract.
